Fourth grade. His name was Carlos and he had a HUGE afro, and I thought he was the cutest thing on earth. Well, the cutest thing at Patrick Henry Elementary School, anyway.
This reminds me of the boy that Anastasia Krupnik (of the Lois Lowry books) fell in love with; for some reason I recall that he listened to Roberta Flack via headphones on the playground. And had an afro (thus the connection).
Anastasia Krupnik! That's so funny - I just read that for my kids' lit class. And yeah, I think the Afro must have been what brought back this memory :)
