Followers of this here blog know that I've been on the hunt for some boots for quite a while. Indecision, unseasonably warm Southern California weather, and lack of disposable income have kind of put the actual acquisition process on hold.
Waiting is sometimes a good thing, though, because during that waiting period I managed to find these - on sale - on the Sundance Catalog website. They're by Camper, from - gasp, the horror! - last season, and available in my size. I just need for them to remain in stock until next payday, and with luck, they will be mine.
New at Zappos from Camper - possibly the cutest shoe they've ever made! I probably won't be getting these, because I know from past experience that this Camper style is too narrow and too flat for me. If I had unlimited funds, though, I'd probably click right here and buy them right now, just to admire the cuteness in person. I mean, how can you not smile when looking at a pair of Mary Janes embellished with a clothesline? Too, too cute.
Although one of my favorite garments, a fantastic skirt with floral embroidery embellished with buttons, is from there, I don't shop regularly at J. Jill. For one thing, their salespeople are insufferable - pushy, follow-me-around-making-comments types that are almost enough to make me turn violent. For another, their prices are rather high. And for another, the place makes me feel downright middle-aged.
But. Every now and then they hit on something I really like, such as these fantastic boots. These may be The One. I'm planning to hold out for a sale, but it's going to be hard.
I am sooooo in love with the red Dansko Jade mary janes I picked up on Ebay recently. So much so, in fact, that I bid on another pair, in black, and won!
Now, of course, I'm on a quest to find the elusive caramel and blue versions. Hey kids! Collect all four!
Why they ever stopped manufacturing this style is beyond me. This truly is the perfect shoe.
I just scored these on Ebay and I can't wait for them to arrive! They're discontinued Dansko Jades, and I've wanted a pair for, like, ever.
Everything,
that is, except the price tag, which is high enough that there really
is not much likelihood that any of them will ever be mine.
*sigh*
My love for Camper Shoes runs hot and cold - every now and then, they come out with a style that I think is so fantastic that I have to spring for it, full price and all.
This may be one of those styles.
If you were no fun at all, you could argue that they are too similar to last year's full price Camper purchase. But being fun-loving, shoe-loving folks, you wouldn't do that, would you?
I didn't think so.
How does it go - first anger, then denial, then finally acceptance? Yeah, something like that.
I'm not talking about grief; well, maybe on some tiny level I am. I'm talking about Chuck Taylors.
I love them. Loooooove them. But I have finally accepted that they do not love me back; narrow, flat shoes with no arch support are not a good match for wide, high-arched feet. The last time I wore mine, for a walk around the Venice Canals, I ended up with such severe arch pain that it kept me awake at night. For THREE NIGHTS.
I realize there's a fine line between fashion and stupidity, and clearly I have crossed the line - for the final time. Those Chucks have been banished to my local thrift store, and I've been spending my days in orthopedic shoes Danskos and Earth and Keens, and all's been well.
Except. Except, I miss my Chucks, particularly when paired with cropped pants. It occurred to me, though, that all may not be lost - thanks to the other shoe queen, I've heard good things about Loose Fit Chuck Taylors.
I'll be springing for them soon. Fifty smackers is kind of a lot for a pair of Chucks, but look at it this way - I'm not buying a pair of shoes, I'm buying acceptance.
Of course I want some new Earth Shoes and Giraudons and Keens and all that, but what I really want, on a purely emotional level, are some clunky old-school Doc Martens with the clownish round toe.
At least I think that's the ones - if so, they can be found via my new dealer Online Shoes. All I ever see in the stores are the ones with the sleeker toe - those, I don't like so much. But that round toe is tempting me!
I haven't owned a pair of Docs in years. Come to think of it, they never really were all that - you had to break them in, as I recall. So maybe it's just a nostalgia thing for me. But there was a time when I swore by them, when I spent long hours during the day waitressing and long hours during the night watching bands in standing-room-only clubs.
Perhaps it's not new shoes that I want at all, it's to be a twentysomething waitress at Millie's* again, flouncing about in vintage aprons and dresses with nary a care in the world.
Yeah. That would be nice.
*Yes, it's true - although neither a rock star nor a hipster, I waitressed at the infamous Millie's of Silver Lake.
Favorite Things Friday is taking a Fall Semester hiatus, but plans to be back in, oh, November. If all goes well, that's another way of saying "after I'm finished with my master's."
But? Remember those cherry shoes? They're finally available, for 159 smackeroos, right here. I plan on saving up!
